WHERE WE WORK IN MEXICO

RESEARCH ON BIRDS IN MEXICO

Our research on Mexican birds focuses on two general areas:

(1) Understanding avian-habitat associations and community structure and the processes underlying these patterns, particularly in the tropics

(2) Developing acoustic recording systems and evaluating their effectiveness for sampling bird populations and communities

ECOLOGICAL RESEARCH

Stopover biology of Nearctic-Neotropical migratory landbirds
  • Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and Banco Chinchorro Reserve
    • Temporal dynamics of migratory bird communities, including species turnover during migration and its ecological and biogeographical correlates
    • Scale-dependent patterns in stopover habitat use and the role of vegetation architecture, plant species composition, and food availability in explainning species' distributions
    • Evaluation of habitat quality through comparisons of habitat-specific foraging behavior and mass gain

Spatio-temporal responses of birds to natural and anthropogenic disturbances
  • Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and El Eden Ecological Reserve
    • Evaluation of the spatial and temporal responses of bird communities, foraging guilds, and populations to Hurricane Wilma in the northeastern Yucatan Peninsula
  • Morelos, Mexico
    • Avian population and community dynamics along a successional gradient in low-stature decidious forest; associations among birds, vegetation, and arthropods

BIOACOUSTICS RESEARCH

Development and evaluation of acoustic recording systems for sampling bird communities
  • Ria Lagartos Biosphere Reserve and El Eden Ecological Reserve
    • Test the effectiveness of an acoustic recording system for sampling bird communities in five tropical vegetation types in multiple phases of the annual cycle

FUNDING RESOURCES

FIELD ASSISTANTS

Over the years many field assistants have participated in our research projects and helped us collect data that have contributed to our understanding of birds in these areas. We want to thank them for all their hard work and friendship, as well as for teaching us a lot about the animals, plants, and history of the regions where we work.
